We often visit restaurant Kapetanova Kuca. It’s one of three restaurants in Mali Ston, a little village at Peljesac peninsula, famed for mussels, oysters and other seafood cultivated and harvested right there, in Ston Bay. Other two restaurants are Bota Sare, and Koruna.
While we do prefer a nearby, low-key family-run restaurant Ficovic in Hodilje, we sometimes go to Mali Ston too. And in Mali Ston, we really like Kapetanova Kuca the most. Their sublime black risotto makes Kapetanova Kuca our restaurant of choice in Mali Ston.
They offer two black risottos on their menu. Make sure to choose the one named “Risotto Kapetanova Kuca”. I think one portion costs 120 kn, which is kind of expensive, but it’s totally worth every penny.
And while there are many reasons why I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant, like high prices, a bit unimaginative menu, and sometimes slow service, restaurant’s black risotto and lovely location keep bringing me back. Seriously, if you want to taste the real black risotto, Kapetanova kuca is the place to go.
Wine list is good here, but wines are expensive, especially bottled wines. Kozlovic Malvazija, for instance, sells in stores for 80 kn, yet it costs 260 kn. And so on. Somebody told me this is also due to the fact that they try to push table wine, as they make higher margins on this wine, although it’s cheaper for the customers (the quality isn’t the same compared with bottled quality wine). I don’t know if it’s true, but it can make sense.
This is a fish and seafood restaurant. Don’t go there pretending you’ll order a steak. They do have a dish or two for those who don’t eat fish. But the rest is seafood. Cold appetizers include octopus salad, shrimp cocktail, fresh oysters, and alike. Warm appetizers include black, and white seafood risottos, various seafood pasta dishes, but also fried oysters, mussels in a wine sauce, and other shellfish. Mains are based on grilled fish.
Kapetanova kuca is busy most of the time. So if you plan to go there, make sure you make a reservation in advance. The interior dining room can accommodate around 50 people, and the outdoor terrace another 80 or so.
