Guests can easily make day trips from these quieter bases to the town of Hvar and other island attractions. Jelsa, Stari Grad, Vrboska, Milna, Zavala, or Sveta Nedjelja also attract visitors looking for slightly more affordable accommodation and general prices than the town of Hvar.
- Hvar Town, the island’s largest town and tourism hub, has many restaurants, bars, and shops. It’s also home to some of the most luxurious hotels and resorts. Hvar Town is the best place for first-time visitors, nightlife, couples, solo travelers, and anyone visiting the island for just a few days.
- Jelsa is known for its picturesque harbor and quiet beaches, perfect for those seeking a peaceful vacation. Jelsa is a great place to stay in Hvar for families with children and visitors looking for more affordable accommodation in Hvar.
- Stari Grad is the oldest town on the island and has a charming old town area with narrow streets and historic buildings. It’s a quieter and more laid-back option compared to Hvar Town and a great place to stay in Hvar if you travel by car.
- Vrboska, a charming fishing village, is often called “Little Venice” due to the sea canal passing through it and its bridges crossing it. It’s a great choice for a more authentic and traditional experience. Hvar Town, the best place for first-time visitors and nightlife
Known for its glitz and glamour, vibrant nightlife, lively beach bars, and round-the-clock parties during the summer, Hvar Town is the main port town on Hvar Island and one of Croatia’s most popular places to stay. It is also the island’s largest, best-known, and most visited place.
The town of Hvar offers a mix of history, culture, nightlife, and stunning beaches. The town center boasts beautiful Venetian architecture and a lively atmosphere, with plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops to explore.
Hvar also boasts a captivating old town with cozy restaurants, fun bars, and cool cafes. Its picturesque beaches, convenient catamaran connections with Split, a diverse range of hotels, and abundant excursion opportunities further enhance its appeal.
Nonetheless, Hvar is bustling, noisy, and notably expensive compared to other towns on the island. It is considered one of the most costly destinations in Croatia. As a result, Hvar may not suit everyone’s preferences and wallet.
When deciding where to stay in Hvar, we recommend selecting Hvar Town as your base during your stay on the island if it is your first visit to the island, if you do not have a car, if you plan to spend only a day or two on Hvar Island, if you seek an exhilarating nightlife experience, or if you are traveling with a group of friends.
Jelsa, the best for families with children and budget travelers
Jelsa is a charming town on the north side of Hvar, offering the perfect mix of relaxation and outdoor activities, making it a great option for families with kids or those seeking a peaceful getaway compared to the bustling town of Hvar.
Jelsa serves as a perfect base for your stay on the island, as it is directly connected to Split by catamaran and has excellent bus connections to Hvar and other locations on the island, making it easy to get around without a car during your vacation.
Jelsa features a picturesque waterfront adorned with cafes, restaurants, and ice cream parlors alongside old stone houses, narrow streets, and lovely squares. The town also boasts stunning beaches and a delightful seaside promenade that leads all the way to Vrboska. Mina and Grebisce are popular sandy beaches near Jelsa, while Vitarnja showcases rocky beaches that locals love for their abundant shade and fewer people.
If you are not sure where to stay in Hvar, Jelsa is an excellent choice for your stay on the island of Hvar due to its relaxed atmosphere, affordable prices, splendid beaches, diverse tourist offerings, and convenient public transportation connections to Split and other locations on the island. However, it is worth noting that the town has limited hotel accommodation options, primarily consisting of private apartments and guesthouses.
Stari Grad, a great place to stay in Hvar if you travel by car
Stari Grad, a charming town on the island of Hvar, offers a serene and laid-back atmosphere, making it an ideal destination for a peaceful vacation. If you’re seeking an escape from the bustling Hvar Town, Stari Grad provides a wonderful alternative, though personally, we prefer Jelsa over Stari Grad.
With its quaint old town, complete with narrow cobblestone streets, hidden alleyways, and charming stone houses, Stari Grad boasts a rich history as one of the oldest settlements on the island. A prominent historical site in Stari Grad is the Tvrdalj Castle, a well-preserved Renaissance building that served as the summer residence of the 16th-century Croatian poet Petar Hektorović. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Stari Grad Plain, is also nearby.
Stari Grad is an excellent choice for car travelers, as it is connected to Split via a convenient car ferry, with a travel time of approximately 2 hours. By selecting Stari Grad as your base, you can immerse yourself in the more traditional side of Hvar Island, explore its stunning natural landscapes, and bask in its tranquil ambiance. The surroundings offer an array of hiking and biking trails, providing breathtaking views of its pristine beauty.
Furthermore, Stari Grad caters to various budgets, offering a range of accommodations from budget-friendly options to full-service hotels. It truly is a destination that appeals to all types of travelers.
Vrboska, great for an authentic village experience
Vrboska is a charming fishing village nestled on the northern coast of Hvar Island. This picturesque destination is a hidden gem that offers an authentic experience with its idyllic harbor, traditional Dalmatian architecture, and quaint streets. Dubbed the “Little Venice”, Vrboska is divided by a slender sea canal, which creates an intimate atmosphere that sets it apart from other towns on the island.
The vibrant harbor is the heart of Vrboska, where locals and visitors gather in the waterfront bars and restaurants. Overlooking the village is the 16th-century St. Mary’s Fortress Church, adding history and grandeur to the scenery. As you explore Vrboska’s lovely alleys, charming corners, and surroundings, you’ll find limestone houses, hidden coves, and lush greenery of olive groves and vineyards.
Indulge in local seafood delicacies at the quaint waterfront eateries or visit Vina Caric’s tavern-cum-wine cellar to sample the finest wines that Hvar has to offer.
Vrboska is the perfect destination for a tranquil summer vacation, filled with leisurely swims, enchanting snorkeling excursions, evening strolls along the waterfront, and the occasional day trip. If you’re looking for a serene and authentic place to immerse yourself in the local lifestyle, choose Vrboska as your sanctuary on Hvar Island.
Milna, perfect for a relaxing vacation close to Hvar Town
Milna is a small coastal town on the western tip of Hvar Island. It’s known for its peaceful atmosphere, crystal clear waters, and beautiful beaches. This area is perfect for those seeking a tranquil vacation away from the crowds but not too far from the hustle and bustle of Hvar.
Milna is the perfect choice for where to stay on Hvar if you want to benefit from the best of both worlds: a tranquil environment with easy access to action-filled activities.
Milna’s charming harbor is a great spot to relax and watch the boats go by, while the village boasts two lovely beaches in the center.
Spend your days lounging on one of the secluded pebble beaches or explore the underwater world by snorkeling or diving. Take a leisurely walk along the village’s promenade and admire the traditional stone houses and quaint cafes. Don’t forget to try some of Milna’s local wines and olive oils.
Zavala, a great option for beach lovers and outdoor adventurers
Located on the southern coast of Hvar Island, Zavala is a hidden gem that offers a truly authentic Dalmatian experience. This small fishing village is surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, making it a great place for wine and olive oil tasting. When deciding where to stay in Hvar for beaches, Zavala is the best choice!
Stroll through the village’s narrow streets and stop at one of the family-run taverns for some delicious seafood and local specialties. If you’re feeling adventurous, hike to the nearby Sveta Nedjelja, a small hilltop village with stunning island views.
Zavala is a great place to stay for couples, wine aficionados, and for beaches. Zavala is a tranquil getaway surrounded by some of the best beaches in Hvar, from Dubovica to the west to Gromin Dolac to the east.
The village of Zavala is in a remote location that can only be accessed through a single road and the Pitve-Zavala Tunnel. This tiny tunnel remains the sole passage that connects the southern part of the island of Hvar with the rest of Hvar Island. It was originally built in 1963 to serve as a water supply route. However, it was later repurposed for road traffic.
The tunnel features a one-way design with two middle extensions and a traffic light installed at each entrance. Interestingly, this is the only traffic light on the entire island of Hvar! The structure measures 1,400 meters long and slightly over 2 meters wide. It has no lights.
Sveta Nedjelja, the best for off the beaten track stay in Hvar
Sveta Nedjelja is a charming village on the southern coast of Hvar Island, below its highest peak – Saint Nicolas (626 m). The village is divided into the old hilltop village and the newer coastal neighborhood.
Known for its vineyards that stretch from the steep mountain to the sea, stunning pebble beaches, crystal-clear waters, and tranquil atmosphere, Sveta Nedjelja is a picturesque destination. Nestled between two impressive cliffs, it offers a unique backdrop to this enchanting place.
If you’re fond of outdoor adventures, Sveta Nedjelja is the perfect place to stay in Hvar. It boasts lovely beaches and rich marine life, including colorful fish and vibrant corals, making it an ideal spot for scuba diving and snorkeling.
The nearby Red Rocks, a natural wonder of high vertical limestone rocks rising from the sea, are perfect for cliff diving. For those seeking adventure on land, plenty of hiking trails offer breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
Sveta Nedjelja is also extremely popular among free climbers, especially Via Ferrata, or Iron Trail, an amazing set of steel steps, ropes, and paths, including the 30 m long Saint Spiridion hanging bridge that sits 80 m above the ground.
Choose Sveta Nedjelja for your stay in Hvar if you enjoy nature, outdoor activities, beaches, and the tranquility of a small coastal village.

Renting an apartment on Hvar gives you a chance to experience an authentic and intimate side of the island, as well as the opportunity to meet locals.
Most apartments come equipped with a kitchenette or full kitchen, making them perfect for those who want to save on dining expenses or plan to stay longer. In our personal experience, we prefer renting apartments over hotels when we plan to stay in one place for an extended period. Camping in Hvar is a popular choice of accommodation for many European holidaymakers visiting the island.
There are a total of 10 campsites available in Hvar, including a few smaller mini campsites located on the less accessible southern shores of the island.

Hvar has three distinctive seasons: off-season running from October through May; shoulder season that includes months of June and September; and peak season of July and August.
The best time to visit Hvar is during the shoulder season, which includes the months of June and September. These two months are perfect for exploring the island without the crowds and enjoying the warm weather without the excessive heat.
The sea temperatures are perfect for swimming, and all attractions, restaurants, bars, clubs, and activities are fully operational. Moreover, accommodation prices are more affordable compared to the peak season of July and August.
